The lithium battery-powered Tesla Model 3 is scheduled to begin deliveries in 2018.
Tesla says it will supply 1,000 lithium-ion batteries a week for the vehicle.
In 2018, the company plans to make 3,000 vehicles with lithium batteries.
Tesla will also begin producing lithium-battery packs for other vehicles.
In the first quarter of 2018, Tesla plans to sell 3,500 Model 3s and 3,800 Model S sedans, according to a Wall Street Journal report.
Tesla is currently the only automaker in the United States to manufacture battery packs for electric vehicles.
Tesla began making battery packs in 2010.
With the Model 3, Tesla has become a leader in the field of battery technology, said Peter Wehner, professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of California at Berkeley, and an expert in lithium-cell batteries.
The company is also creating the first electric vehicle that can use lithium-sulfur batteries, he said.
“The Tesla Model III is the first battery for electric cars that is truly electric and that uses lithium-metal batteries,” he said in an interview.
“Tesla is one of the few manufacturers that can actually produce that type of battery in the U.S. And, it is the only one that is doing that.”
Tesla’s battery technology is similar to those used in other electric vehicles, but unlike other electric vehicle batteries, Tesla’s is more stable.
The lithium-rich battery technology also can handle higher temperatures, and is more durable than the nickel-metal hydride batteries used in some other electric cars.
Wehner noted that Tesla’s lithium-based batteries are safer than the lead-acid batteries that make up the bulk of conventional electric vehicles and that lithium-on-metal battery technology has been around for a long time.
For example, the Tesla Model E battery pack that will power the Model S sedan in 2018 is made from a combination of lithium-cobalt-zinc-hydride (LiCZ), a non-cathode material, and nickel-cadmium-lead-zirconium-telluride (NCLT), a cathode material.
The Tesla Tesla Model X battery pack is made of lithium iron phosphate, a lithium metal and an alloy of nickel-chromium-silicon, a carbon.
Both batteries have an improved performance compared to the lead acid batteries used for electric and hybrid vehicles, Wehner said.
Wehner also said Tesla has built a reputation as being environmentally friendly.
According to the Center for Auto Safety, Tesla is the third-largest consumer of lithium in the world.
Tesla is one the leading suppliers of batteries to the electric vehicle market.
Although Tesla has not disclosed its full-year 2019 sales figures, Weaker said Tesla’s market share in the vehicle segment has remained steady over the past two years.
However, the battery pack technology that Tesla uses is a much different product from the ones used in electric vehicles used in Europe and Asia, said Wehner.
It has a much lower thermal conductivity than the NiMH batteries that have been used for many years in electric cars in the West, he added.
He also said the lithium batteries that Tesla is making for the Model X will not be as efficient as those used for conventional vehicles.
Weaker added that Tesla may sell more than 1,200 batteries per week for several years before it needs to upgrade its manufacturing capacity.
One of the problems with electric vehicles is that they are extremely complex, Weyer said.
That means that they have to be engineered to meet the most stringent environmental standards.
To date, Tesla and other electric car companies have focused on making the battery cells themselves, but this may not be the best option, Weiler said.
The batteries themselves may not perform as well as the batteries that go into electric vehicles because of the manufacturing process, he suggested.
Some analysts expect the company to ramp up production of the lithium-powered Model 3.
Weyer predicted that by 2020, the total capacity of Tesla’s battery supply will double.
By then, Tesla will have more than 12,000 battery packs with a capacity of 500,000 to 1,500,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh), Weyer noted.
There are about 1,600 lithium-dioxide batteries in the global battery market, according the U-M Energy Institute.
Tesla’s demand for lithium-oxide batteries is growing, according U.K. battery expert David Wood.
Wood told CNBC that lithium batteries are “the future of the automotive industry.”
“I think that we will see lithium-oxidation as a way of getting batteries that are efficient at the battery cell level, which is what we have been working on for years now,” Wood said.
